Achiropita is the Italian translation of Acheiropoieta, the Greek word that defines images "not made by human hands", to indicate those images or sacred objects to which the western religious tradition ascribes a miraculous origin. Achiropita is also a female name derived from the cult of Maria Santissima Achiropita, widespread in Southern Italy.
Achiropita does not derive from a religious vision, rather from an archetypal imaginary, animated by a pantheistic scent.
Wandering around with my 35mm analog camera through the streets of cities and towns teeming with people, infrastructure, homes, these archetypal and out-of-time visions happened before my eyes, as they always did, and as they always will, and as they always do, even if I don’t picture them. These images were there, hidden in the plethora of landscapes of the Anthropocene, and through the lens they found their way to escape: they became images not made by human hands, which do not belong to the buildings and concepts of man, but only to the mystery of time.
